Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market

When: Saturdays throughout the summer

Where: 501 First St. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401

The Draw: It is big, vibrant, and busy!

From the end of May to late September, there's no better way to spend a Saturday morning in Cedar Rapids.  Hailing itself as "one of the largest and most popular open-air markets in the Midwest," the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market has been serving the region for over twenty years, bringing a wide variety of sights, sounds, and--of course--flavors.

With over two hundred vendors, live music, and activities for the kids, Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market is a must-visit, especially for anyone new to the area.

Don't miss: The premium bakery items, including scones, jellies, jams, and mini breads.

Farmers Market at Old MacDonald's Farm

When: Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00pm, June 5-September 25

Where: Bever Park, 2700 Bever Avenue SE; Near the entrance to Old MacDonald's Farm

The Draw: A slower pace and shaded walkways.

Formerly the Noelridge Farmers' Market, the Farmers Market at Old MacDonald's Farm has recently moved to a new location that now provides wider spaces and slower paces. Vendors sell fresh fruits, vegetables, and local crafts in a relaxed, well-shaded environment.

Like at other farmers markets in the area, many of these vendors are also certified to accept WIC!

Don't miss: The in-season strawberries!

Hiawatha Farmers Market

When: Sundays from 10:00AM - 1:00 PM; May - October.

Where: Hiawatha Park; 704 Emmons Street

The draw: A major focus on health and wellness.

Serving the greater Cedar Rapids area, the Hiawatha Farmers Market not only offers fresh fruits and vegetables but also serves up a variety of meats, local honey, flowers, baked goods, arts, and crafts.

Because this market's core values include promoting the sustainability of local agriculture and improving the nutritional well-being of customers, organizers work hard to ensure that all vendors adhere to strict consumer guidelines.

So if you are visiting farmers markets as part of a broader focus on sustainability and wellness, this may be the right market for you!

Don't miss: The wide range of organic vegetables!

Shopping in Season at Cedar Rapids Farmers Markets

The farmers markets in Cedar Rapids are a reflection of Iowa's strong agricultural traditions. Currently, more than 96% of Iowa's farms are family farms, and 33% of Iowa farmers are women! The state also ranks high for environmental sustainability for both its crop and cattle farming.

When you shop at farmers markets, you're helping support this proud tradition!

Of course, one of the beauties of shopping at farmers' markets is that you can always find in-season produce. Knowing which options are in season during which months can help you enjoy the most delicious and nutritious options all summer long.

Best Practices for Navigating a Cedar Rapids Farmers Market

Always be sure to arrive early. This will help you avoid the heat of the day and enjoy the first pick of all the best each vendor has to offer.

Next, bring your own reusable bags from home. This is not only a sustainable option but a wise one. Many vendors do not provide bags. Furthermore, if you're an impulse shopper, you'll be less likely to overspend as you begin running out of space in your bag(s)!

If you're sensitive to the sun, consider a sun hat or an umbrella. Though the latter might be unwieldy in a crowd at one of the larger markets, you will be able to avoid the worst of the heat and protect your skin from potential sun damage.

Finally, remember to bring along some cash in small bills, as some vendors do not accept tap-to-pay or credit cards.
